Sleeping and the time it takes

If we are suppose to get an average of about 8 hours of sleep in any given 24 hour period, that means every three days we will have slept the equivalent of one whole 24 hour day.  Thus if we adhere to the 8 hour average of sleep a whole third of our life is spent in slumber.  A 90 year old person has slept approximately 30 years. Wouldn’t it be cool if we only had to sleep like 1 hour in every 24 hour period and were just as refreshed and ready to go as if we had slept 8 hours?  We would have so much more time to accomplish things.  I wonder if history would be completely changed if people had never needed more than an hour of sleep a day?  I mean with all that extra free awake time would people have been able to figure out a lot more things?  Though maybe, I guess, some great ideas came about because they percolated through a full nights sleep.

I like sleep, don’t get me wrong.  I love to take naps, and when you wake from a good full night sleep you usually feel pretty great the rest of the day.  Still, I think it would be cool to be able to have some of those hours we use for sleeping to use for other things, like conscious thinking.  Of course, assuming we were not required to work during the unslept hours, a lot of us would probably just party and drink.
