The Zombie Brain

I suppose it was really only a matter of time before somebody decided to really figure out what was going on inside a zombies brain.  Further more, as io9 offers, it is probably most appropriately done by a Harvard Psychiatrist.  The fun with the piece is in that it offers pretty sound scientific explanations for why a zombie would do the zombie things it does (all and all it sound like zombie-ism is a pretty rough disease).

The piece is good all around, and interesting, especially if you want to know what different parts of your brain are responsible for.  The part that I like the best is that Dr. Steven C. Schlozman (that Harvard Psychiatrist) says he doesn’t think that the infected people from “28 Days Later” and its sequel actually count as zombies because they possess too much higher brain function allowing for simple problem solving, the ability to “hunt” their prey, and much more proficient motor skills.  Perhaps Dr. Schlozman’s argument can finally settle up the debate on the zombieness* of those “28 Days Later” folks.

All around a good piece . . . I enjoyed it muchly.  I’m glad to see that somebody is fighting the good fight in understanding the way zombies work.

*Note:  I have held for quite some time that those “folks” in “28 Days Later” and “28 Weeks Later” are not true zombies, though  had never used the brain function model in my argument.  My main stance is that they are still alive and eventually will starve to death if left without food.  Zombies are suppose to be undead.  Also, I’ve never really liked the fast running thing, partially because it really scares the shit out of me, but further it just takes out some of the ridiculous fun of classic zombies.  I will give the “28 Days Later” folks a title of “zombieoid”, in that they have some similarities (and the movies are definitely based on the zombie flick model) but ultimately cannot get the full stamp of zombie-being approval.

  1. Dr. Steven Schlozman has also just been named the newest member of the Zombie Research Society’s Advisory Board!
